A coastguard spokesperson confirmed the crash of a US V-22 Osprey with 8 crew members near Yakushima Island off Japan's coast.

Survivor status remains uncertain, but the coastguard transported 1 unconscious individual discovered at the scene.

The Osprey, a hybrid from Bell Helicopters and Boeing, has a track record of fatal crashes, being capable of both helicopter and fixed-wing operations.
